How is elephant poo
paper made?
Dung is collected and
washed with water. The fiber
that is left behind is cooked
in water with salt and
washed with hydrogen
peroxide to make it bacteria
free. The water is drained
out for use as fertilizer. The
dung is left to dry in the sun.
Then it heads to the
Hollander Beater to be
beaten to pulp. The fiber is
washed again and
disinfected to kill any
bacteria. The pulp is taken to
cement/wooden vats filled
with water. A flat sieve-like
mould is used to lift a layer
of pulp out of water. A sheet
of paper is made – this is
placed on a muslin cloth by
applying gentle pressure
onto the mould. This
process continues till there
is a heap of about 100
sheets. These are
compressed in a hydraulic
press to drain water. The
paper is dried on lines in a
shady area. Direct sunlight
makes color fade. Paper
sheets are calendared to
make them smoother and
writable. The sheets are cut
to the specified size, packed
and sent out!

since the elephants eat
jowar (sorghum) and bajra
(pearl millet), the paper is
